This collection of musical pieces is the result of a project -- a game, in fact -- where 15 willing participants got combined into randomized trios and, recording entirely at home and collaborating remotely, took turns producing original pieces from scratch. The rules: each player is responsible for starting a piece for their first trio, gets to contribute to a second trio started by somebody else, and gets to be the finishing contributor in a third trio. Beyond that, it was wide open as to instrumentation, genre, style, etc. and each contributor could steer their pieces in whatever direction they felt like. The groups are arranged so nobody plays together twice. By design, the turnaround was pretty quick, so we started working in January 2022 and were (mostly) done recording by April. The finish line: to have an album of completed tracks we could publish on bandcamp!
I'm honored and pleased as hell to have everybody show up to participate in this game I cooked up. I am old friends with everybody participating, but many were complete strangers to each other before this. Most of us live in or around Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, NC, plus one in Carolina Beach, NC and one in Pittsburgh, PA. We have people who have been in bands for decades and people new to recording, musicians working in many different genres and styles.
In the spirit of DIY effort and community-building, this album is being offered for free, or pay what you like. All money received will be donated to the ACLU or Carolina Abortion Access Fund to sustain the essential work those organizations are doing. (This is *not* a fundraiser and we aren't set up as a nonprofit for tax purposes, so please if you want to support these or other good causes, donate directly and make it count!)
